Our Basketball Training Programs — Practice Drills & Skill Development

At Illinois Attack, our boys basketball training programs are designed to develop complete players from the ground up. We run structured sessions throughout the year — fall, winter, spring, and summer — so youth athletes can build their skills continuously, not just during the traditional season.

Our practice drills cover every area of the game. Players work on ball-handling, footwork, shooting drills, defensive positioning, and offensive execution in every session. Each drill is selected by our coaching staff to mirror real game situations, ensuring that what players practice on the floor translates directly to their in-game performance.

We offer several program tracks for boys:

• Pre-Season Academy (Fall) — Get ahead before tryouts with intensive skill-building and basketball IQ sessions.

• 4PM Skills Training (Winter/Spring) — Focused individual skill development for 3rd–8th grade players.

• Thursday & Friday Night Training — High-energy team training sessions that emphasize competition and execution.

• Sunday Night Training — Full player development sessions including shooting drills and live play.

• Summer Small Group Training — Small-group format for concentrated, coach-guided skill work.

Each program is led by coaches with real college and high school coaching experience. Our youth coaching model emphasizes repetition, accountability, and basketball IQ — giving every player a foundation they can build on for years.

Whether your player is a beginner learning basic drills or an advanced athlete pushing for high school recruitment, our basketball training sessions are structured to meet each player where they are.

Youth basketball development is most effective when it's consistent and intentional. That is why we do not run one-off clinics and call it a season. Our year-round approach to boys basketball training ensures that players improve month over month, building on the skills they develop at every practice.

Youth Coaching Philosophy — What Sets Illinois Attack Apart

Great basketball development starts with great coaching. At Illinois Attack, our coaches are not just experienced in the sport — they are committed to building relationships with every player they work with.

Our coaching staff brings a combined decades of experience at the collegiate, high school, and AAU levels. This background means they know exactly what it takes to develop youth athletes for the next level — whether that means earning a spot on a school team, playing at the AAU level, or pursuing college recruitment.

Our youth coaching philosophy is built around three pillars:

  1. Fundamentals First — Every player, regardless of skill level, works on core basketball fundamentals in every session. Ball-handling, footwork, shooting mechanics, and defensive technique are drilled consistently so they become second nature in game situations.

  2. Basketball IQ — We teach players to understand the game, not just play it. Our coaches walk players through offensive sets, defensive positioning, and situational basketball so they can make smart decisions under pressure.

  3. Character and Confidence — We believe the best basketball players are also the best teammates. Our youth coaching model emphasizes effort, accountability, and respect — qualities that serve players on and off the court.

Illinois Attack also offers private training for players who want individual attention outside of team sessions. Private sessions are customized to address a specific player's needs — whether it is shooting mechanics, handles, footwork, or positioning — and are run by our experienced coaching staff.

If you are looking for boys basketball development that goes beyond the ordinary — a program where every player is seen, developed, and challenged — Illinois Attack is the right fit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Boys Basketball Training

At what age should you start basketball training?

Most youth players benefit from starting structured basketball training between ages 7–9 (roughly 2nd–3rd grade). At Illinois Attack, our youngest programs start with K-2nd grade players in Jump Start clinics, progressing to more structured skill development as players advance to 3rd grade and beyond. Early training builds coordination, basketball IQ, and a love for the game.

How do I train my kid for basketball?

The best approach is a combination of consistent practice, quality coaching, and exposure to competitive play. Enroll your son in a structured basketball program with experienced coaches who can guide skill development systematically. At Illinois Attack, our boys basketball training sessions are designed for all levels — beginners and experienced players alike.

What are the 5 D's of basketball?

The 5 D's of basketball are Dribbling, Defense, Drive, Dish (passing), and Distance shooting. Our coaches incorporate all five into our practice drills and team sessions so players develop a complete skill set for any game situation.

What is the 80/20 rule in basketball?

The 80/20 rule suggests that 80% of a player's improvement comes from mastering 20% of core skills — especially dribbling, shooting, and footwork. Our basketball training philosophy reflects this: we drill the fundamentals relentlessly because mastering the basics is what separates good players from great ones.

How much does boys basketball training cost?

Cost varies by program type and session frequency. Illinois Attack offers multiple boys basketball training options at different price points — from single-day clinics to full season programs. Contact us for current pricing and registration information.
