Rip-through footwork – foundational movement for ball protection
-
Jump stop technique – for balance and control on the court
-
Pivoting fundamentals – how to move legally and maintain position
-
Proper passing form – chest pass, bounce pass, and more
-
Basketball court lines – including the sideline, elbow, free-throw line, and 3-point line
-
Basic basketball rules and terminology – such as double dribble, traveling, and out of bounds
GAME GOALS
Jump Start builds on the fundamentals by introducing more advanced youth basketball training techniques in a fun, supportive environment. Our goal is to help young players understand the flow of the game and improve their decision-making on the court. Throughout the season, kids will learn:
-
Where to go on the court during offense and defense
-
What side of the court to be on when playing defense
-
That they don’t always need to run straight to the ball
-
How to cut to the basket after making a pass
-
What defines a good shot
-
The importance of learning from mistakes, like traveling violations, in a way that builds confidence. Coaches will explain what went wrong and offer a do-over to reinforce learning.
By the end of the program, players will have a strong grasp of basic basketball rules and penalties. They'll also develop positive habits like good sportsmanship and maintaining a team-first attitude which are key parts of any youth basketball program.
